Identification Tags... More important than you might think!

According to OSHA, if your business has machinery and equipment, you need to take the proper actions to ensure employees know how to operate and move it, if necessary.

Considering many workplace accidents happen as a result of improper instructions and labeling, you must have clear and noticeable labels on all your machinery and equipment. A small investment in an identification tag can make a world of difference in your place of business.

Types of Identification Tags

First off, let's discuss the different types of identification tags available for commercial usage. There are two main categories: metal and plastic. Read on to find out the specifics of each type.

Metal Tags

Metal tags are great if you need to put them in areas that are exposed to high temperatures or harsh weather conditions. The inherent robust properties of metal make it so your employees can always see the words on them.

Here are some of the common types of metal ID tags you can purchase:

  • Stainless steel: The toughest type of metal ID tag available; exact strength depends on the alloy content. It resists corrosion and can be engraved with a CO2 laser, chemical spray, or fiber laser, depending on the coating.
  • Anodized aluminum: The best choice if you want colored metal tags; these are lightweight and scratch-resistant. They can be rotary or laser engraved. Choose from up to 12 colors.
  • Brass: These are corrosion-resistant too. You can get them either plain or with a decorative lacquer-coated finish, making brass metal tags a wise choice if you're going for better aesthetics.

Plastic Tags

Plastic identification tags are quite versatile; if you aren't worried about harsh weather conditions or high temperatures, then plastic can be a great choice. These can also be a wise option if you need to label things such as electrical panels, as they won't conduct any electricity.

Plastic ID tags can also be engraved or printed. We suggest engraving over printing, as ink can wear off over time.

Which Material Should You Use?

Now that you know about the basic types of identification tags, you may be wondering which one's right for your purposes. Here are a few things you should consider when deciding between metal or plastic ID tags.

The Environment

As we said above, some labels may be exposed to harsh conditions. In that case, plastic may not be a good option, as metal is significantly sturdier.

However, if you're going to be using your identification tags indoors in normal conditions, then both types can be suitable.

Conductivity

If you're labeling an electrical or operational panel where there's the possibility that electricity could pass through the tag, and there's a chance your employees could come into contact with it, then the wiser choice here would be plastic.

What Printing Method You Want

For ink printing, you'll need to use plastic ID tags. Otherwise, if you want engraving or etching, metal tags are better suited for those purposes.

 How to Use Identification Tags

Industries that may find identification tags useful include aerospace, building & construction, electrical & plumbing, engineering, oil & gas, utilities, and more. As you can see, ID tags are very versatile. Here are just a few ways you can use them in your business setting.

Warning Signs

Do you have a room where there's either high-voltage or heavy equipment, and you need to warn your employees to be cautious in that area? Then having a tag on both the door and the equipment itself can be very useful.

With a simple symbol or a word of warning (such as "DO NOT ENTER" or "STOP"), you can send a clear message immediately. This can stop unauthorized employees from entering a dangerous room unnecessarily.

To Keep Track of Customers

Are you in a business where you shuffle customers in and out frequently? For example, you may run a hotel that has lots of guests.

You can use identification tags to keep track of your customers. Give each one a tag with a number on it (for instance, with the hotel room number printed on it), so you can keep track of where your customers are or which one's supposed to be next for your provided service.

To Promote Your Brand

Identification tags aren't just for industrial use! You can print some out for tradeshows and other related events too.

Print your brand name, logo, and or motto onto some small plastic identification tags. These can then be used as keyrings, bookmarks, etc. Attendees can walk away with some personalized and branded materials.

Use Identification Tags for Better Workplace Safety

As you can see, identification tags are not just useful for labeling different pieces of equipment. They're also hugely beneficial in keeping everyone in your workplace safe. Plus, you can use them for marketing purposes as well!

With so many different ways to use identification tags, your business is sure to benefit from them. So allocate a little of your budget for something that can have a significantly positive impact on your company.
