What are the main advantages of aluminum tags over other types of metal tags?

We sell our colored anodized aluminum tags in bulk at wholesale prices. There’s a few advantages to these tags over other types of metal tags. So, read on to learn more…

Several colors and scratch resistant

Our anodized aluminum tags are available in eleven color choices, which is the most significant advantage. Offering this many colors allows you to use them for color-coding purposes, or to incorporate company, organization, or team colors into your project.

Our anodizing process to color our aluminum tags isn’t a surface treatment like painting, powder coating, or plating. In fact, it’s a subsurface treatment that deposits dye into the open pores of the aluminum. Then, we follow this up with a process that seals those pores shut, trapping the dye under the surface of the metal. Thus, the surface of your tags are left with a hard transparent oxide layer.

The transparent oxide layer of our anodized aluminum tags makes the surface very scratch resistant. Thus, extending the readability of your engraved tags over time, even in harsh conditions where the tag is subject to abrasion, severe weather conditions, or harsh chemicals.

Great readability

Another advantage of anodized aluminum tags is the high contrast between the surface color and the engraving.

You can deep rotary engrave anodized aluminum tags. In this process the engraving cutter cuts through the anodized layer and into the core aluminum. Therefore, the engraving is a bright silver color in contrast to the color on the surface of the tag.

Aluminum tags can also be laser etched. The laser burns through the surface color but not into the core aluminum. This results in a white engraving because the oxide layer has not been removed but is showing through in the etched areas.

Think about your color choice

When choosing a color for your aluminum tags, keep in mind the engraving will always contrast better on a darker tag color. If you select a silver color for your engraved tags, the contrast between the silver surface and the color of the engraving will be very slight; especially when laser etched.  If the tags are deep rotary engraved, the contrast is more defined because of the depth of the engraving, but still not as good as the contrast with darker colors.

Are Anodized Aluminum tags right for you?

Aluminum tags are the lightest weight and most economically priced metal tags we offer. And, they’re by far the most popular with our customer base.

We do not, however, recommend aluminum tags for applications where they’ll be exposed to temperatures over 500 degrees Fahrenheit. At these higher temperatures the color will quickly fade, making the laser etching very difficult to read. But, if the tags are rotary engraved, they may remain easier to read due to the depth of the engraving.

With this in mind, if your application requires your tags to hold up to high temperatures, we recommend either our brass tags, which are capable of withstanding temperatures of over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, or our stainless steel tags. They’ll withstand temperatures over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.
