Aluminum Tags

Aluminum tags are the best choice when you need a colored metal tag for color-coding because aluminum can be anodized which is a process that allows the aluminum to be dyed with any color and then in a second step, we seal the dye into the pores of the aluminum under a transparent sapphire hard oxidation layer that is not a coating but a permanent part of the aluminum.

We offer our aluminum tags in 12 anodized colors and we can also do custom colors if the quantity is high enough to justify a custom run. We can also make any custom size or shape tags you may need, so please don't hesitate to ask our sales department if you need anything that you don't see on our website.

What are the main advantages of aluminum tags over other types of metal tags?

Our colored aluminum tags are sold in bulk at wholesale prices and have a few advantages over other types of metal tags, the most significant of which is that they are available in twelve color choices. Offering this many colors allows our customers to use our aluminum tags for color-coding purposes or to match company, organization, or team colors.

The anodizing process we use to color our aluminum tags is not a surface treatment like painting, powder coating or plating, but a subsurface treatment that deposits dye into the open pores of the aluminum. The next step is to seal the pores shut trapping the dye under the surface of the metal and leaving a hard transparent oxide layer on the surface of the tag.

This transparent oxide makes the surface of the tag very scratch resistant, and therefore the engraved tag will remain readable for an extended time even in harsh conditions where it may be subject to abrasion, severe weather conditions or harsh chemicals.

Another advantage of anodized aluminum tags is the high contrast between the surface color and the engraving. Anodized aluminum tags can be deep rotary engraved in which the engraving cutter cuts through the anodized layer and into the core aluminum; therefore the engraving is a bright silver color in contrast to the color on the surface of the tag.

Aluminum tags can also be laser etched in which the laser burns through the surface color but not into the core aluminum, leaving a white engraving because the oxide layer has not been removed and is showing through in the etched areas.

When choosing a color for your aluminum tags, keep in mind that the engraving will always contrast better with a darker color. If you select a silver color for your engraved tags, the contrast between the silver surface and the color of the engraving will be very slight; especially when laser etched.  If the tags are deep rotary engraved, the contrast is more defined because of the depth of the engraving but still not as good as the contrast with darker colors.
Finally, the other advantages to aluminum tags are that they are the lightest weight and most economically priced metal tags we offer and by far the most popular with our customer base.

We do not, however, recommend aluminum tags for applications where they will be exposed to temperatures over 500-degree Fahrenheit because the color will quickly fade at this temperature, making the laser etching very difficult to read.

If the tags are rotary engraved: they will remain easy to read because of the depth of the engraving.

If your application requires the tags to hold up to high temperatures, we recommend either our brass tags which are capable of withstanding temperatures of over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit or our stainless steel tags that will withstand temperatures over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.
