Aluminum Tags

Aluminum tags are the best choice when you need a metal tag with color because aluminum can be anodized which is a process that allows the aluminum to be dyed with any color and then in a second step, the color is permanently sealed into the pores of the aluminum under a glass clear sapphire hard oxidation layer that is not a coating but a permanent part of the aluminum.

We offer our aluminum tags in 12 anodized colors but we can also do custom colors if the quantity is high enough to justify a special run. We can also custom make any special size or shape tags you may need, so please don't hesitate to ask our sales department if you need anything that you don't see on our website.

Tags can be ordered online by choosing the category you are looking for below.

What are the main advantages of aluminum tags over other types of metal tags?

Our colored aluminum tags are sold in bulk at wholesale prices and have a few advantages over other types of metal tags, the most significant of which is that they are available in twelve color choices. This allows the tags to be used for color coding purposes or to match a company, organization or team colors. The anodizing process we use to color our aluminum tags is not a surface treatment like paint, powder coating or plating, but a subsurface treatment in which the color is actually embedded into the pores of the aluminum and then using a thermochemical process; the pores are sealed shut trapping the color under the surface of the tag and leaving a very hard clear oxide material on the surface of the tag. This clear oxide makes the surface of the tag very scratch resistant and therefore the engraved tag will remain readable for a much longer period of time; even in harsh conditions where the tag may be subject to abrasion, difficult weather conditions or harsh chemicals.

Another advantage of anodized aluminum tags is the high contrast between the surface color of the tag and the engraving. Anodized aluminum tags can be deep rotary engraved in which the engraving cutter cuts through the anodized layer of the tag into the raw aluminum; therefore the engraving is a bright silver color in contrast to the color on the surface of the tag. They can also be laser etched in which the laser burns through the color but not all the way into the raw aluminum and this will leave a white engraving because the oxide layer has not been removed and is showing though in the areas that have been etched. Anodized tags can also be stamped or coined in which a hardened die indents the customers information deep into the surface of the tag.

When choosing a color for your aluminum tags keep in mind that the engraving will always contrast better with a darker colored tag. If you choose a silver color for your engraved tags the contrast between the silver surface of the tag and the color of the engraving will be very slight; especially when the tags are laser etched. If the tags are deep rotary engraved, the contrast is more defined because of the depth of the engraving but still not as good as the contrast with darker colors.

Finally the other advantages to aluminum tags are that they are the lightest weight and most economically priced metal tags we offer and by far the most popular with our customer base.

We do not however recommend aluminum tags for applications where they will be exposed to temperatures over 500 degree fahrenheit because the color will quickly fade at this temperature making the laser etching very difficult to read. Rotary engraving remains easy to read even if the color fades due to the depth of the engraving but if your application requires the tags to hold up to high temperatures, we recommend either our brass tags which are good to over 1000 degrees fahrenheit or our stainless steel tags that will take temperatures up to over 2000 degrees fahrenheit
